Green your Deck-Building

When you get the urge to build a deck, fence or any other outdoor wood structure, it's important that you choose an adequate and earth-friendly sealant to protect your lumber. If you don't, your deck will will rot and you'll have to kill more trees a few years down the line to replace the soggy warped structure that was once your deck.

Although making your lumber last is a worthy environmental concern, your choice of sealants isn't just about saving trees. Most conventional sealants contain high levels of
VOCs and other toxic chemicals that can end up hurting your homes air quality. Not to mention, putting those toxins into your local ecosystem.

Deck Tips: Why is Important Vinyl Deck Flashing

Posted by Maryland Deck Builders in wood decks , vinyl decks , tips , screened porches , roofing , patios , gutters , fences , deck flashing , additions

A very common home improvement job is the deck.  Decks add a great place for you and your family to enjoy the outdoors, as well as adding a little class to your back yard.  Of course, as with any other home improvement project, the installation of a deck is very important.  There are a lot of things to be concerned about, not the least of which is stability of the deck itself.  But one thing that many home owners don’t think about it the importance of deck flashing, especially Vinyl Deck Fashing

Vinyl Deck Flashing     Vinyl Deck Flashing or any kind of deck flashing, is not something that many home remodelers think about simply because it is not something that you see immediately when you are looking at a deck.  The deck flashing or vinyl deck flashing is used to protect the house from water damage once the deck is installed.  It essentially lines the places where the deck is attached to the house and creates a place for the water to run off.  It also protects the deck from rot and damage that can lead to structural failure.  If you are thinking of using metal rather than vinyl deck flashing, be sure to use deck flashing with the same heavy metals found in the wood you are using for the deck.  Vinyl deck flashing can be used with almost any type of wood or even with some other materials, including PVC and vinyl decks.        There are a lot of benefits to using Vinyl Deck Flashing over metal deck flashing.  Vinyl flashing won’t react to any of the chemicals in the wood of a deck; some lumber is treated with ACQ chemicals, and these chemicals will react with metal flashing.  This is not a problem with vinyl deck flashing.  Also, vinyl flashing won’t discolor or deteriorate the way metals will.  Some metal flashing will change color with the exposure to weather elements, but this is not a problem with vinyl.  Another good benefit of vinyl deck flashing is that it cuts easily and is not razor sharp like metal flashing; this means less serious cuts to your hands when you are installing it.
